Sega Rally Championship
Sega Rally doesn’t have a story, instead relying on players attempting to best their scores as the primary reason to return. Isn’t the goal of personal development and bettering oneself the greatest story of all though? Whether you succeed or fail at your goal though, nothing prepares you for the ending you receive. It’s not enough that you can’t quite make the checkpoint in time and get a game over though, is it Sega? Game Overs are tough enough as it is, we don’t need someone singing it to us every time it happens.
Final Fantasy IX
I’ve read entire essays dedicated to attempting to explain what the hell Necron was supposed to be, and I still have no god damn clue. The plot to Final Fantasy 9 is winding enough as it is, with summoners, political assassinations and weird monkey people all playing their parts in a vast web of intrigue. Having set up an awesome final battle against Kuja, the game’s primary antagonist, Square then decided it just wasn’t cool enough. So they send some random dickwad last boss in who looks totally stupid and has no foreseeable place in the game’s story. Great idea guys, way to create a cohesive narrative.
