Activision: “Smartphone CPU/GPU Will Reach XBox 360 Levels Within Next Generation”

And hopefully they'll bring about a better looking game than Black Ops: Declassified.

Smartphones are blowing up in power, but you already knew that. With quad-core becoming common, and 2 GB of RAM poised to enter into the portable world, it’s a new level for a medium considered to cater to only “casual” gamers.

Activision vice president of mobile development Greg Canessa feels the smartphone will only go further.

In an interview with CVG, he stated, “The CPU and GPU capabilities of mobile devices will reach Xbox 360 levels of graphical fidelity and processing power within the next generation. The games that Activision publishes on console, the games it publishes on PC, pretty soon we’ll be publishing those kinds of experiences on tablets and smartphones.”

From the days of World at War: Zombies to a full-fledged Black Ops 2 for mobile devices? It may not happen tomorrow, but you can bet Activision has something in mind.

Canessa stated, “We have a rich thirty-year history from the Atari days to the Blizzard merger. We have about 350 different brands and IPs to work with. That’s legacy IP, that’s triple-A IP, and that’s licences with other companies. Mobile is an emerging business for the company and it’s something we’re taking very seriously.”
