Tantalus CEO: “Impossible to Call Jobs in Gaming Industry Secure for 5 to 10 Years”

Mass Effect 3 Wii U port developer shares his views on the instability of the gaming industry.

Tantalus Media might not be the first name that comes to mind when you think “game development studio”. However, with years of experience in converting and porting games to consoles, including the upcoming Wii U port for Bioware’s Mass Effect 3, they have tons of experience and know-how regarding the industry’s operation.

And while it may have it’s rock stars and celebrities, Tantalus CEO Tom Crago’s concludes that it’s an extremely unstable profession to pursue.

Talking to Gamasutra, Crago stated, “Fundamentally, and I realise this is a little controversial, I came to the conclusion that in an industry as volatile as video games, it’s impossible to put your hand on your heart and say to any of your developers that their job is going to be secure for the next five or 10 years. I feel like anyone who does that is kidding themselves, and so I determined to be much more transparent about our business, both in terms of its challenges and its successes.”

With the number of lay-offs and studio closures, it’s hard to argue with Crago’s view. Are the current “blockbuster game” and “yearly sequel” trends responsible?
