Sony Online Entertainment has announced that Planetside 2 is now available worldwide, and in case you don’t know what that means, get up from your couch and go start playing the game because it’s awesome. Yes, it’s free-to-play, and one of the most ambitious games ever created.

So what is Planetside 2?

Players can opt to play as one of six classes to aid their chosen Empire in global domination. They’ll fight for control of key territories and valuable resources on three playable continents – Indar, Esamir and Amerish. With an extensive skill tree and free-form class-based system, players will be able to customize their soldier, weapons and vehicles to match their play-style, as well as the needs of their squad, outfit or empire.

PlanetSide 2 sets the new standard for shooters,” said John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment. “With thousands of players fighting simultaneously across several beautiful, massive continents, the size and intensity of PlanetSide 2 has no equal. You’ve never played anything like it.”

It really is something ambitious as someone who has checked out the game, it looks to be a defining point for MMOs. Ever since Payday: The Heist, I have immense respect for Sony Online Entertainment, I know they can deliver a fantastic game here.

You can also buy a $9.99 premium membership, and to be honest, it looks like a great deal. Here’s some of the benefits premium members will receive.

Premium Members will receive priority log-in queue access, early access to new cosmetic items and a monthly Station Cash bonus. Players who maintain their membership over time will accrue enhancements to their benefits, and players who purchase their membership in multi-month blocks will receive an increased benefit gain immediately.

We also have some amazing screenshots from the game and a trailer, so check them out below.
