Wii U: Does it upscale Wii games?

Partially true.

Posted By | On 09th, Dec. 2012

There’s been a big issue with a recent finding that the Wii U doesn’t upscale Wii games especially in the Europe. However, according to a few intelligent sources, it’s been found out that the Wii U does indeed upscale games but only with HDMI.

In case you don’t know, the Wii U only supports HDMI and component video output and does not feature any optical out for audio. There’s no reason for this given by Nintendo, because they really want to keep the Wii U simple, however, considering backwards compatibility is a big issue to many, the lack of these options can cause some pain to a few people.

According to a new digital foundry report, it stated that: “Important AV options are omitted from the Wii menu, with the PAL console unable to upscale to HD resolutions or run in progressive scan over component – an issue that doesn’t seem to impact NTSC hardware.”

Cubed3 reports that this quote was misinterpreted by many, because it is only partially true. They say that the Wii U doesn’t upscale Wii games with component cables, but does upscale with HDMI cables.

Well still this is a bit rubbish considering not many people use HDMI, and yes, I know it’s 2012 and HDMI is a must because most TVs have that output now.
