Sony had recently patented a new tech that blocks used games, and that apparently has scared off Gamestop investors. The company makes a lot of money on used game sales and it’s something that a lot of developers have complained about, but will Sony actually implement in the PS4? We will see.

The report earlier suggested that the patent blocked the game from running on two different consoles based on the tag information. Michael Pachter commented on this issue and expressed faith in Gamestop, here’s what he thought about the situation.

“Sony benefits little from a unilateral decision to block games,” he said.

“The company’s first party software sales represent less than 10 percent of overall sales on its consoles, and it is unlikely that blocking used games would result in a lift of more than 10 percent in new game sales. That means that Sony’s sales would rise only marginally if the PS4 blocked used games.”

“Sony would be materially hurt if its console blocked used games and competitor consoles from Microsoft and Nintendo did not.”

What he wrote in a note to the investors makes a lot of sense and hopefully Sony wouldn’t go ahead with something like this because it’s anti-consumer.
