Earlier today, Xbox Live, Microsoft’s online gaming service from where digital purchases, social networking, Netflix, multiplayer and many other vital functions are performed, went down.

The cause was unknown – though some suspect that it could have been the work of hacktivist group Anonymous – but it meant that many gamers would be unable to access a lot of their content. Some content which was paid for via Xbox Live Gold.

An analogy for what could happen when an always online Xbox 720 hits the market? Perhaps.

It was confirmed however that the outage has been fixed 3.58 PM PT/11.58 PM BST with an update reading: “If you were one of the members who was having issues signing in to Xbox LIVE, good news! This issue has been fixed! Thank you so much for your patience during this time, feel free to go enjoy your favourite games and content!”

However, on an unrelated note, it seems that Minecraft users are unable to create new saves or access existing ones. Affected apps include Last.fm but Microsoft has stated that it is working on a fix for both issues. Stay tuned for more information.
