Relic Entertainment’s Company of Heroes 2, releasing on June 25th for PC and continuing the award-winning strategy series, looks at the World War II conflict from a noticeably different perspective: That of the Soviets. As the Germans fought to control the U.S.S.R., the Reds banded together in great numbers to halt them.
Or so history and Call of Duty: World at War will tell you. Company of Heroes 2 appears to tell an entirely different narrative with its single-player campaign, with soldiers being sacrificed in the name of the war effort and commanders who can’t in good conscience call abandoning their troops to be an act of “courage”.
It’s definitely not your typical narrative, and we’re interested to see how it plays out after all the war stories of triumph of good over evil with the requisite theatrics overshadowing the tragedy. Hopefully Company of Heroes 2’s campaign will provide that little bit of nuance in spades when it releases next month.
