The seventh generation of gaming is almost done and dusted. With the Xbox One and the PS4 ready to hit the market in but a few months and the PS Vita, 3DS and Wii U having already found their footing, the days of the HD twins and motion controls will soon be a distant memory. They will, however, be some very fond memories. Like every generation of gaming, there have been some franchises in particular that came along in the last few years and took us by surprise at how good they were. From tromping through a jungle as an explored to exploring alien worlds throughout the galaxy to stealthily assassinating high profile targets, there have been several new franchises that came along in the seventh generation of gaming and changed the way we look at games.

So in celebration and as thanks to those great franchises, here’s a list of what we think have been the ten best new franchises to come up on the scene in the past few years this gaming generation.

Let’s begin!

10. Wii Franchises [Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, Wii Party, Wii Music etc]

Once every few years a game comes along that goes on to define the system it’s been released for and what its future will be like. While Nintendo struck critical gold with Ocarina of Time for the N64 and Metroid Prime for the Gamecube, with the Wii, it wasn’t a trusted old golden nametag that defined what the system will be, rather a collection of minigames that went on to spawn a meta-franchise of sorts.

With Wii Sports, Nintendo attracted all sorts of gamers, potential gamers and even non-gamers to their then newest console, and with that they gave birth to the Wii franchise, releasing other well-known titles such as Wii Fit, Wii Music, Wii Party and Wii Sports Resort. Some of their quality and place amongst the hardcore market might be up for debate, but there’s no denying that the Wii meta-franchise defined an entire console.
