Capcom tries reviving old time arcade games

Posted By | On 20th, Dec. 2010

Capcom have decided that every week, they will be releasing two new arcade games from the 1990’s era on the Wii Virtual Console, to re-invoke “Capcom’s position as the greatest arcade game creator in a time when skill was everything and cutscenes hadn’t even been thought of.”

Here is the entire press release:

If, like some of our more ‘mature’ members at Capcom, you can remember the joy of working for high scores in dirty, smoke-filled arcades then the classic Capcom arcade games available on Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console Arcade are just what you’re looking for. Every few weeks we’ll be releasing a pair of games from the early 90s that helped earn Capcom’s position as the greatest arcade game creator in a time when skill was everything and cutscenes hadn’t even been thought of.

It’s our hope and wish that these arcade classics, in their original pure form, invoke in you the old ways of game playing, because the old ways are the best ways. And if you’re unfortunate enough to have missed this era of gaming then this is the perfect opportunity to experience first hand some of the most important arcade games of their time. A videogames connoisseur that has not experienced 1942 or Commando is the equivalent of a film connoisseur that hasn’t seen Citizen Kane.

And what better way to celebrate your re-acquaintance with good old fashioned scoreboard domination than a competition that recognises the very best players from across Europe. And so we begin our Capcom High Score Hero search right here, right now, because every two weeks from now until late February we’ll be awarding the top three scorers of each game a certificate that gives them the OFFICIAL title of High Score Hero. Each certificate will be unique to that person, for them to frame and proudly proclaim from wherever they choose to display it as evidence that they are MUCH BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE AT VIDEOGAMES. And who doesn’t want that?

The competition begins with Commando: Wolf of the Battlefield and SONSON, available right now for 800pts on the Wii. Simply play, take photographic evidence of your excellence and then email that image to highscorehero@capcom.com and the winners each fortnight will be announced on this blog. The first set of certificates will be awarded in the new year so pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa, download the games and get busy.

The next set of releases will be Ghosts’n Goblins and Exed Exes on January 7th, and the seminal 1942 and Black Tiger on January 21st.
