Though the company is having problems hitting its targets for the Wii U, which sold a meager 160,000 units in the three months ending on June 30th, projections for the Nintendo 3DS seem more realistic. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently stated during a Capcom event in Tokyo that the company was looking to sell 5 million units of the handheld in Japan alone during the fiscal year. He also stated that Nintendo plans to sell 18 million units overall worldwide.
“There are more and more media reports suggesting that things aren’t going very well for the dedicated gaming hardware business. But that’s not true, at least for the 3DS in Japan,” stated Iwata.
Considering that the 3DS sold 1.4 million units in the three months ending on June 30th, which was down from the previous year, it might seem hard. But it’s definitely possible. Nintendo managed to sell 5.5 million 3DS units in Japan in 2012, with 13.95 million handhelds sold worldwide.
