Ten years ago, Rockstar’s crime epic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was a staggeringly massive game, pushing the limits of what could be achieved on home consoles and PCs. Now, today, you can carry that game around, in all its glory, uncompromised, in your pocket on your smartphone.

Rockstar has announced that the final epic Grand Theft Auto adventure for the PlayStation 2 era of consoles, will be making its way to select iOS, Android, Kindle, and Windows Phone devices some time next month. On iOS and Android, it ill also feature native controller support.

The game is notable for a variety of other reasons too: it is the first GTA game to show up on a Kindle or Windows Phone device, for instance, which should certainly be good news for Microsoft at the very least, as they try to slowly but surely legitimize the Windows Phone ecosystem.

Of course, it’s baffling why Rockstar keep making phone ports of these games, but won’t put them on the Vita, especially when Vita was designed to expedite the porting process from smartphones to the handheld. It seems short sighted to ignore dedicated hanhelds like that, and I hope Rockstar will come around soon.
