Super Mario 3D World Skipped Online Multiplayer to Emphasize Local Play

I.e. spend time with your friends and family, darn you.

Super Mario 3D World

It’s amazing to see a Mario game, especially one as critically acclaimed as Super Mario 3D World, sell so little especially in Japan. Nonetheless, despite its rather unorthodox position, there are other things that stick out – such as why a game like this doesn’t feature online multiplayer.

Producer Yoshiaki Koizumi clarified this to Game Informer. “We’ve been testing online multiplayer since the days of Super Mario Galaxy, but with this title we really wanted to deliver an experience that you can share with family, friends, or your boyfriend or girlfriend in the same place like you did with the original NES.

“We really want players to have fun in front of the TV, talking while they help each other out or get in each other’s way.”

So for Nintendo, it’s more about the fun and excitement of spending time with friends. Can the same not happen with random strangers and for that matter, what if your friends live out of town? What are your thoughts on this? Let us know below.
