In a surprisingly consumer friendly and accommodating move, Microsoft have announced that anybody who cancels Xbox Live Gold in June in the wake of yesterday’s policy changes will be getting refunds based on how much time of their subscription was still left.

Now, you might be wondering why anyone would cancel Gold after yesterday, which is when Microsoft finally took a leaf out of PS+’s book and made Xbox live some actual good value for users- but the simple answer is, a lot of more casual users simply don’t care for playing online, but only subscribe to Live Gold so they can access Netflix, Hulu, and Bing on their console. Now that all apps are available for free, those people would have no incentive to continue with their subscription, and they would obviously like refunds. Microsoft is offering them those.

“Once the Xbox One and Xbox 360 system updates become available in June, Xbox Live Gold members who purchased a paid membership before that day can cancel and receive a pro-rata refund of any unused remaining days between the date of cancellation and the date their paid Gold membership ends.

“Cancellation and pro-rata refund requests must be made by August 31, 2014 and require six to eight weeks for processing. Free or trial Gold memberships are not eligible for a refund. To request your pro-rata refund, please click support.xbox.com/contact-us after the system updates become available in June.”

It’s a good move, and once again, it’s good to see Microsoft actually be pro-consumer for a change.
