Nintendo kicked off its press conference with an awesome Robot Chicken segment and then immediately segued into a battle between president Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime. What was the point? Why, to introduce Mii characters for Super Smash Bros. Wii U of course!

You’ll have three different classes of Mii fighters including Brawlers, Swordfighters and Gunners, which each have their own special moves and abilities. Mii fighters will thus have up to 36 different abilities overall. It also seems that you can put just about any character into the game to face off against off the usual Nintendo roster of characters.

According to Sakurai, the 3DS version is currently under bug testing and will be ready soon. He also showcased some footage of the gameplay we can expect from the 3DS version. Overall, the game is looking pretty good and features shades of the Adventure mode from previous releases.

Nintendo will also be introducing toy figurines called Amiibos for use on the Wii U. When touched against the Wii U GamePad, the character in question will be downloaded into the game in question. Heck, even the figure’s data will be changed in the process. Super Smash Bros. will be the first game to support Amiibos with plans for Mario Kart 8 to support the same. As seen in the battle between Iwata and Fils-Aime, you’ll be able to bring Amiibos as additional fighters into matches.
