Turtle Rock Studios’ Evolve pits four players as Hunters against one player-controlled monster in a battle for survival. While the initial design behind the Goliath was easy enough, creative director Phil Robb says that some of the more wicked creatures like the Kraken were inspired by Nature.

Speaking to Shack News, Robb stated that, “With Goliath, we went for classic. The first monster is everything you expect from a giant monster, it should do everything you would want to do: throw giant rocks, breathe fire, jump huge distances, climb up walls. All that stuff. So we looked at Godzilla and King Kong, those two particular monsters were a huge inspiration for Goliath.

“With Kraken it gets a little more obscure. A lot of people have compared him to Cthulu, but we also looked at a lot of nature. We’re big fans of Sir David Attenborough.

“I’ve got to tell you, man, nature comes up with more terrifying, fucked up shit than we could ever come up with. So deep down in the sea, where there’s giant squids – if you look at the way Kraken moves, it’s very much like a giant squid. It’s very much based on those creepy deep sea creatures.”

We’ll find out just how much more terrifying when Evolve launches on October 21st for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
