It’s probably easy to forget, now that all three home consoles accept any hard drive to supplement and expand the storage space they have, but the Xbox 360 used entirely proprietary hardware that Microsoft sold at an enormous mark up for most of the generation.
Amazingly enough, Microsoft never had an Xbox 360 hard drive with a capacity of over 320 GB; however, now Microsoft has confirmed that, nine years after launching the Xbox 360 and one year after its successor had launched, they will be releasing a 500GB hard drive for the system, that will go on sale for $110. Microsoft also confirmed that the price of the 320GB model will be dropping ‘soon.’
“A new Xbox 360 500GB media hard drive will be available starting this month,” a Microsoft representative told Gamespot. “The Xbox 360 500GB media hard drive will be available for $109.99. We are working with retailers to revise pricing on the Xbox 360 320GB media hard drive to maintain market competitiveness, as we do on a regular basis.”
Well, er… if you still have an Xbox 360 around, and want more hard drive space for it, I guess this is your cue.
The Xbox One currently comes with a 500GB hard drive. Another model, with 1TB of storage space, is planned for launch later this year; all Xbox One models support any external hard drive without any proprietary hardware needed.
