Call of Duty Advanced Warfare (2)

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is going to be the first entry in Activision’s annual shooter gala that will be built with the newer consoles in mind. I mean, true, just like last year’s Ghosts, Advanced Warfare will also be on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but this time, the game is not built around them and then up-ported, as was the case last year.

Speaking to The Examiner, Sledgehammer’s Senior Development Director, Aaron Halon explained exactly how the new consoles would benefit Call of Duty.

“You’re able to have a lot more processing power, so if you can push things on screen, like more special effects and higher-res textures,” he said.

He also talked about the new things Sledgehammer is trying out with Advanced Warfare, new not just for Call of Duty or the studio, but for first person shooters in general.

“We’re doing a lot of things that are new with our characters,” Halon explained, “We have simulated muscular features in the face called blend-shapes, and those are new.”

Halon also talked about the potential for motion capture, and performances by real world actors in video games going forward.

“We use performance capture, so in the case of Kevin Spacey, you’re his face, his voice, his body and it’s like a film. You’re really filming him and then we transpose him digitally into our world,” Halon said, “All of those things are new and in my opinion make the game a lot better.”

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launches later this year. Stay tuned.
