Ontos Delayed to 2027 to Deliver Frictional’s “Most Ambitious Game to Date”

Originally meant for 2026, the development team looks forward to sharing more updates on "our characters and our world soon."

Frictional Games’ next game, Ontos, was absent over the Summer of Gaming, and we’ve finally learned why: It’s been delayed to 2027.

In a new tweet, the studio called the title its “most ambitious game to date, both in terms of its size and scale, and in the depth and layers of our story and gameplay.” To deliver on that, it’s pushing the release ahead to next year, joining the likes of Fable, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and more.

On the bright side, it’s looking “forward to more updates” about the world and its characters “soon.” Perhaps a new trailer or gameplay at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August? Time will tell.

Previously slated for this year on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, Ontos is set on Samsara, a former moon hotel. As Aditi, you’re searching for clues about your father, engaging in experiments that allow you to venture beyond the current reality.

Of course, these have consequences, and there’s plenty else to be done otherwise, from calibrating machines to gathering materials (with the larger “experiments” compared to Shadow of the Colossus). Frictional touts the lack of a singular solution, encouraging players to improvise, though it’s remained clear this isn’t a horror game in the “traditional sense.”

Perhaps the most intriguing part of Ontos is the inclusion of Stellan Skarsgård, who played Lucian in the critically acclaimed Andor. His role has also yet to be fully fleshed out, so hopefully we’ll learn more about him – and his connection to Aditi – in the coming months. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the meantime.
