PS4 (Finally) Crosses 900,000 Units Sold in Japan

It's come a long way, with a long way to go.

PS4 has finally been recovering from the anemic and weak performance it has consistently exhibited in Japan, where, contrary to the rest of the world, it is routinely outsold by the Wii U (and even the PlayStation Vita). However, last week was a particularly good one for the console, as it sold in excess of 80,000 units, its best showing since launch, and finally managed to clear the hurdle of 900,000 units sold in the region.

A lot of this can be attributed to the fortuitous timing of the launch of the Dragon Quest game on the PS4, alongside a special bundle, which launched there right in the peak of the holiday season.

Of course, as well as the PS4’s recent performance is, it is still not even half of where Nintendo’s Wii U stands (with nearly 2 million units sold), and more importantly, the behemoth it will have to contend with if it wants to garner developer support in the country, the Nintendo 3DS, with well over 15 million units sold(and no signs of stopping- as well as the PS4 sold last week, the 3DS still outsold it).

Next year, with Final Fantasy, Bloodborne, Disgaea, Ys, and Persona 5, the PS4 should see higher, more consistent sales.
