Spencer On Xbox One’s Backward Compatibility, GFWL And More

'We have to do better than we did with GFWL.'

Phil Spencer took to Twitter again to discuss Microsoft’s recent announcements regarding PC and Xbox gaming, and they should come off as encouraging to everyone. First, let’s get the bad news out of the way: he confirmed that as of right now, Microsoft has no announcements to make regarding any kind of backwards compatibility on Xbox One, including the kind of streaming solution that Sony employs for PS4 with PS Now.

“We don’t have anything to announce on this right now but I like the idea of getting access to all my games,” he said. He also responded to fans’ worries that Microsoft bringing all its Xbox One games to PC (which they recently implied with some statements that they made) might kill off the console.

“I want Xbox One to be the best way to play games on my TV and as an XBL member I want access to all my games and friends,” he said, drawing a demarcation between console and PC gaming. About PC gaming, he had this to say:

“I understand PC only gamers wanting more from us. We started the discussion this week and we’ll have more to come. Keep pushing us,” he said, before a fan reminded him of Microsoft’s track record with GFWL. To that, Spencer said, “Totally understand that we have to go much further than we did with GFWL, I agree with you.”

As always, you are saying all the right things, Spencer. I just hope you follow through with it all. PC gaming has been burned by Microsoft too many times.
