Deus Ex Mankind Divided

Eidos Montreal and Square Enix recently revealed the newest installment in the long running, fan favorite Deus Ex saga, when they announced Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The game looks absolutely incredible, and its reveal was unlike any other game reveal too, taking a leaf out of Twitch Plays Pokemon’s book, and letting the cumulative choices that players made influence the direction the stream would take leading up to the game.

Speaking to GamesIndustry, Deus Ex Global Executive Brand Director Andre Vu explained that this reflected the mechanical and thematic content of Mankind Divided, which they wanted to play a major role in the game’s reveal as well.

“We wanted the audience to experience the current state of the world in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which is referred to as the Mechanical Apartheid. What was also important to us was that one of the core parts of the Deus Ex experience, choice and consequence, was reflected throughout the Twitch stream. This was done through the use of interactive votes, where players could decide which path would be taken by the characters within the Twitch stream, and view the direct consequence of their choice,” Vu said.

Of course, the problem was that the entire thing was leaked before the stream had a chance to conclude. How does Vu feel about that?

“Obviously, this leak was unfortunate, but our fans, who spoke out against the leak and pushed for it to be removed due to it containing spoilers, were happy that we stuck to our initial vision. Overall, we definitely feel that the project concluded on a very positive note,” Vu said.

On the whole, it was certainly a stylish and innovative way to reveal a game, making the reveal itself a mass game, and I do hope to see more of it going forward.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
