Call of Duty Black Ops 3

Treyarch recently let loose the details about Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. We already know the game has its very own in-game Wiki, meaning there’s plenty of story to tell. One of the things the company is going to have to be aware of, is just how far in the future they are willing to go. Single-player campaign director Jason Blundell and studio head Mark Lamia sat down with Polygon and talked about treading that line.

Blundell specifically was asked during the interview whether or not there was indeed a risk of having the game end up so far in the future that it would be like another Halo. For his part, Blundell didn’t seem to think there was a particular line nor was there a danger in crossing it. Blundell pointed to the very first Black Ops, set in Vietnam is the way he personally goes about working with the story.

“We wanted a place that was historically kind of cut off. The media questions about what was going there was kind of sketchy. It was that ambiguity. That’s what that environment brought to us. It wasn’t about the Vietnam War. It was just a backdrop, a setting for those characters to go through their journey.” Brundell added there is no boundary in mind and he doesn’t see a purpose for that.

Lamia added that the team putting together Black Ops games prefer to go back in time. He pointed to the Vietnam War setting, as well as Black Ops 2 which takes place in the 1980’s Cold War. The future war is something new for the team. Lamia said that they are going to take a step back and think about things. This will let them make the kind of game they feel is worthy of the series.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is due to release in November for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
