PS4 Universal remote

Earlier this year we found out that Sony was bringing a universal remote that was branded with a PS4 design to the North American market at some point this year. Now we know the remote is actually going to be hitting the US and Canada sometime this month. Earlier this week, Sony announced on it’s official blog the long wait for the remote was almost over.

This marks a kind of seachange in the approach Sony is apparently taking with the PS4. The company appears to want to make the console more of a centerpiece in the home audio and video collections of its users. While there isn’t an official release date, just a release month, we do know that the remote is going to cost those who want it as much as $29.99. Of course, this is a true universal remote with the ability to not only control a number of devices but also a number of different applications. You’ll be able to control the PS4, as well as your TV, cable box, and audio receiver and the following apps and services:

  • Blu-ray Disc Player
  • Crunchyroll
  • FUNimation
  • HBO GO
  • Media Player
  • NBA GAME TIME
  • Netflix
  • NFL Sunday Ticket
  • PlayStation Video
  • PlayStation Vue
  • Twitch
  • YouTube

Some of the confusion over just when the remote is going to be active comes from the fact that two different retailers have two different release dates listed. Amazon has an October 27 release date while Toys R’ Us lists it’s arrival day as 11/07. Whenever it does finally arrive, you can preorder the PS4 universal media remote now.
