Nintendo is sending out devkits for their upcoming Nintendo NX system, reports say. These devkits are being sent out more than a year ahead of the system’s anticipated Q4 2016 launch, which means third parties should hopefully have enough time to learn the ropes of the system, and get on board.
The Wall Street Journal reports that sources have said that the console will include a “mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use.” This lines up with our previous theories on the nature of what the NX is, and also seems to confirm that the NX will replace both, the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U.
Nintendo has also offered a brand new development portal, which is offering easy tools to facilitate development for the NX- since a poor development toolkit was one of the reasons that the Wii U saw an exodus of development support early on.
“We’ll soon have advanced project tracking and ROM submission, project-based message boards and more, helping you with every step—from concept, to publish, to counting your accolades,” Nintendo’s developer website says. “And as always, you’ll have the best global developer support team ever, right from the start, making the Nintendo Developer Portal your go-to resource.”
“Our newest gem in the box is the NDI Client. NDI stands for Nintendo Dev Interface, but it’s really going to be your new best friend. The NDI Client will help make sure you have the optimal development environment on your development system — by downloading and installing it all for you! You can tailor it to the platform you’re developing for, the SDK you want, even the region you’re working in. It allows easy download of all the relevant guidelines and documentation you need to do your work. It even allows you to update the firmware of certain development kits.”
It sounds like Nintendo has really learned from all the failures of the Wii U- the question now is, have they learned too late, or can they stage a comeback still?
