One of the biggest features of Halo 5: Guardians is that we’re being introduced to a new central character since we first met Master Chief. Locke is taking over the mantel in Guardians a bit and because of this, 343 needed to make sure they gave the character his own personality and motivations that were dissimilar enough to the Chief that people would be interested in learning more about him. Now, the company has specifically laid out a couple of the major differences between the two characters.

Among the biggest difference is that Locke appears to have a little more swagger to him. He was introduced by showing the fact that the rock band Muse was playing on his headset heading into a mission, and 343’s Kiki Wolfkill explained to GamesRadar+ why the company feels as though they need to make sure these two characters are very different. “You look at Chief, who is sort of conscripted as a child and became a Spartan not necessarily by choice, and then there’s Locke, who chose to be that kind of person – those contrasts are really interesting.”

Josh Holmes added that “some other aspects of our universe that haven’t been explored as deeply in the other games. ONI is a kind of shadow organisation that has its finger on a lot of the events that impact the UNSC and ultimately, the galaxy. What would it mean to take someone from that organisation and have them make the transition to Spartan-dom?” We should get to know more about Locke during a livestream that will be going on just before the game launches and then Halo 5: Guardians goes live on October 27, 2015.
