Nintendo On NX: We Think We Can Be As Profitable As We Were In The Wii/DS Era In Three Years

Nintendo

It seems almost impossible to believe now, but just five years ago, Nintendo was at the top of the world. The DS was en route to becoming the highest selling system of all time, and the Wii was breaking all software and hardware sales records. Nintendo was rolling in the money, and at the peak of its market value capitalization.

Today, with the failure of the Wii U and the 3DS, and a few years straight of losses behind them, Nintendo doesn’t seem to be doing as hot. People are expecting the Japanese giant to recover from this, thanks to its commitment to making mobile games, as well as its upcoming new system, Nintendo NX- and Nintendo themselves, it seems, are pretty bullish on their own prospects.

‘There is potential for us to return to the same kind of profitability we had in the Wii and DS era within three years,’ Nintendo’s president Kimishima told Nikkei in an interview. The goal, it seems, is to rack up members for Nintendo’s new My Nintendo service via their mobile games, and then to migrate them over to the Nintendo NX- which Nintendo will talk more about in 2016, Kimishima promised in the same interview.

Is this too optimistic, or can Nintendo achieve this? They have pulled amazing comebacks throughout the entirety of their history- they didn’t survive for 130 years in a ruthless market by not being able to recover from stumbles. All eyes are now on Nintendo, as they move into the next era of their history.
