Best Gameplay Mechanic of 2015

Intriguing gameplay mechanics that took fun to an all together different level.

What would games be without their gameplay? Aside from a pretty assortment of graphics and sound, there wouldn’t really be much to do aside from admiring your surroundings. Each game has its own unique “hook” or intriguing little concept to ensnare players and this is reflected in their core mechanics more often than not. This year didn’t see a number of breath taking new mechanics but what we did get were fun to peruse. Let’s take a look at the nominees for best gameplay mechanic of 2015.

Nominees:

  • Fulton System – Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
  • Settlements – Fallout 4
  • Footage system – Her Story
  • Inklings – Splatoon
  • Wingsuit – Just Cause 3
  • Traversing levels with box copies – Box Boy

Winner: Fulton System – Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

By all accounts, the Fulton Recovery System in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain isn’t exactly new. It was first introduced in the series with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, allowing players to garner resources, soldiers and other helpful items for later use. In The Phantom Pain however, the Fulton System was used for some truly outlandish activities and kills. Wanted to get a bird’s eye view of your enemies? Fulton a shipping container, hop on top and shoot your foes like they’re nothing. Want to send a new little surprise to that guard in the watch tower? Stick some explosives to an unconscious guard, Fulton him up and detonate the explosive. Though the Fulton system is still best when one is trying to gather resources to upgrade Mother Base, the combination of hilarity and intermixing with other gameplay elements simply made it a blast to play around with.
