Street Fighter 5

Street Fighter V, the latest installment in Capcom’s long running fighting game saga, is almost here. The game is shaping to be probably one of the greatest fighting games of all time, given its mechanical splendor, and just how viable it seems to be for competitive and tournament level play; but if you are a primarily single player guy, Capcom has you covered too, as today, in a new blog post on Capcom Unity, they discussed some story details for the title.

“There are two main components to the story experience: Character Stories and the Cinematic Story Expansion,” Capcom said. “We knew there would be a lot of new players who are jumping into the franchise for the very first time so we wanted to provide a way for everyone to become familiar with the eclectic personalities of each fighter. Each character has their own storyline that provides background information on what drives them to fight, and what their relationships are to the other characters.”

Capcom further said that each character’s story has been illustrated by renowned Japanese illustrator, Bengus.

“For the first time in franchise history, we are creating a cinematic story experience that takes players deep into the Street Fighter action and mythology through beautifully rendered cutscenes,” Capcom said. “The Story Expansion will be available to all players as a FREE content update, releasing in June 2016. Chronologically in the Street Fighter storyline, it takes place between the events of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III, and fully explains everything that transpired in that electrifying time period.”

The story expansion, then, appears to be the major story and narrative component of the game; it won’t be available right at launch, but you should be able to get it for free by June. Capcom also released a new trailer for this cinematic story campaign, that you can see for yourself below.

Finally, the timings for the last beta for Street Fighter V have also been announced. The final beta starts on January 30, 12:01am PT, and ends January 31 at 7 PM PT. You can pre-order at streetfighter.com/purchase for beta access.

Street Fighter V launches exclusively on PS4 and PC.
