While Assassin’s Creed Chronicles games are keeping fans of the long running series happy, to a degree, Ubisoft announced earlier this week that a major Assassin’s Creed game isn’t coming in 2016. The announcement on their official blog actually confirms rumors that had been circulating around the franchise and the company since late last year. Most interesting about the announcement is that Ubisoft directly points to Assassin’s Creed: Unity as one of the reasons the firm won’t be bringing an edition in 2016.

“We’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise. We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground,” the company said.

What the firm didn’t confirm is whether or not Assassin’s Creed Empire is the game that will be coming sometime in 2017. It doesn’t appear we’re going to get a ton of information about next year’s title until later this year at the very least. Maybe we’ll see the game at E3 this year or maybe Ubisoft really is going to take a break and keep the game away for a while. In the meantime, it appears we’ll have to make do with the second Watch_Dogs, likely during the Holiday season this year.
