Will Call of Duty 2016 Come With Backwards Compatible Modern Warfare 1 And 2 For Xbox One?

If true, then that makes the Xbox One version of the game pretty attractive.

So far, Activision are one of the publishers who have obstinately refused to support the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility feature on the Xbox One- this in spite of the fact that Activision published Xbox 360 games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are among the most requested games for the service.

However, if this report is to be believed, then that may be about to change- the Xbox One version of Call of Duty 2016, which is under development at Activision’s Infinity Ward studio, could come with backwards compatible copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

This does not sound extremely unlikely- as a reminder, the Xbox One version of Fallout 4 came with a copy of Fallout 3, the Xbox One version of Just Cause 3 came with a copy of Just Cause 2, and the Xbox One version of Dark Souls 3 comes with a copy of Dark Souls. So this is not exactly a hard rumor to believe- the only problem is that Activision have so far shown no interest in revisiting their older games at all. Not only are they averse to Microsoft and Sony’s backwards compatibility solutions, but they have also, for example, avoided remasters, even as so many other publishers have jumped on board that trend.

There is also the fact that Activision currently partners with Sony on Call of Duty, and a move like this could feasibly make the Xbox One version more attractive than the PS4 version. This would definitely be a problem- Activision and Sony have worked extremely hard at billing PlayStation as ‘the home of Call of Duty.’ This would just undermine those efforts, especially since inertia is on the side of Xbox being associated with the series.

Is this true? It’s hard to tell right now, honestly. But it sounds like a legitimately consumer friendly move, so I hope that it is.
