Now that the Oculus Rift has officially launched, we’re finding out even more about the VR device than we knew before. One detail that should get those who bought the headset and those that are thinking about buying it excited, is its developer have said they want the Oculus Rift to remain an open platform. That means people who purchase it won’t need to wait until the next Oculus Rift game goes live on the official store. They can purchase games through platforms like Steam as well

Developers will also be able to reach a broader audience because they will be able to sell their games through whatever platform they choose. “The Oculus platform and store are designed to provide the best VR experience and content, but we also recognize that people will want to use apps that aren’t available on the Oculus platform or in the store,” a post on the company’s blog states. “As a developer, you don’t have to be in the Oculus Store — you can sell outside, and when you do that you can you use your own IAP if you prefer, and we don’t take a cut.”

The only real catch appears to be that players will need to change a setting in the home menu so you can play games that weren’t issued or tested through the Oculus platform. It doesn’t appear that’s more than going to the Rift menu and clicking a toggle switch. If you’re excited about this feature but still not sure whether the Oculus Rift is right for you, check out our review roundup for help.
