Quantum Break is now out, and while people will argue about whether or not it lived up to its immense hype, there is probably little doubt that the PC version of the game is, yet again, an immense disappointment. Much like Microsoft’s other PC ports from their renewed push for PC gaming – games such as Gears of War Ultimate Edition or Rise of the Tomb Raider – Quantum Break really suffers in its transition to PC, with poor optimization and a whole host of issues.

So if you happen to be one of the people running into issues with the PC version of the game, this guide will try to help you. Given just how bad the situation is, really, there are no guarantees that any of these tips or suggestions even work for you.

First, make sure your PC can actually run the game:

Minimum Specifications:

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-4460, 2.70GHz or AMD FX-6300
  • RAM: 8GB RAM
  • VRAM: 2GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 or AMD Radeon R7 260x
  • DirectX: DirectX 12

Recommended Specifications:

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 4690, 3.9GHz or AMD equivalent
  • RAM: 16GB RAM
  • VRAM: 4GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 390
  • DirectX: DirectX 12

Ultra Specifications:

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i7 4790, 4GHz or AMD equivalent
  • RAM: 16GB RAM
  • VRAM: 6GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti or AMD Radeon R9 Fury X
  • DirectX: DirectX 12

Please be advised that the following methods are to be used at the sole discretion of the platform owner. GamingBolt or its staff members take no responsibility for problems that may arise or issues that may occur from trying the below. Always remember that official support is always the best support.

STARTUP CRASHES, BLACK SCREEN ERRORS, AND APPCRASH ERRORS

There’s a whole range of issues, sadly, that creates problems for you when you attempt to even start up the PC version of Quantum Break. To make sure you can get past this extremely basic and very fundamental stage, make sure you:

  • Have the latest version of Windows 10 installed
  • Have your GPU drivers updated
  • Are running the game in Windowed mode

Beyond all this, some other fixes you can look into trying are:

  • Cleaning your registry (registry errors often cause crashes). A good utility to do that is CCleaner, which you can download from here.
  • If the error message indicates either a DLL problem or an APPCRASH, either:
    • Do a fresh, clean reinstasll of DirectX
    • Download the missing DLLs from here and paste them in the game directory.

LOW FPS, GAME STUTTERING, SLOWDOWN, AND LAG ERRORS

Again, there is a whole litany of errors here that can be causing these issues. Some fixes to the potential causes of these problems are:

  • Make sure your GPU drivers are updated. If you are using an AMD card, you need to be using the latest Crimson edition Radeon 16.4.1 Hotfix drivers for this game.
    • Equally, if you are using an AMD card, disable Raptr from Task Manager
    • Set ‘Tessellation mode’ to 8x/16x from your Crimson edition Radeon 16.4.1 Hotfix software and turn off Vsync there too.
  • Disable G-Sync and V-Sync
  • Lower the in game resolution- the game is terribly optimized, so even when your rig should be powerful enough to run the game at higher resolutions and settings without issues, the game’s poor coding might create issues
  • Remember, SLI and Crossfire don’t work with Quantum Break, because multi GPU setups are currently not supported
  • Nvidia users should set the ‘Power Management Mode’ option to ‘Prefer Maximum Performance’.
  • Call up the Task Manager, and set Quantum Break‘s process to High Priority
  • Disable any background high intensity software, including recording software, or communication clients like Skype. This includes all overlay software too.
  • Finally, if you are playing the game on a machine with less than 8GB of RAM, virtual memory leaks can be causing the slowdown. In that case, right click MyComputer > Properties > AdvancedSystemSettings > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Change Virtual Memory. Set page file for C drive to be anything higher than your current RAM (if you are 4GB, try switching it to be 5GB).

SAVEGAME ISSUES:

A bug in the game can cause a progress wiping savegame issue on older builds of Windows 10. To ensure you don’t run into this problem:

  • Make sure you are running the latest version of Windows 10
  • Make sure you signed in with your own Xbox profile when you started the game

CROSS SAVE ERRORS

Theoretically, Quantum Break supports Cross Save- this means that your progress is kept synched across the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions of the game. However, since this is the first time we are seeing Microsoft’s implementation of the technology, there seems to be some kind of confusion. Remember, this is not an error, and Cross Save is working exactly how it should- it’s just not working how you want it to:

  • Naturally, make sure you are signed in with your Xbox Live account on both, your Windows 10 PC, and your Xbox One
  • Make sure your device is connected to the internet- Quantum Break can’t synch your progress unless it can access its servers
  • Synching can take time and is not immediate- if your save is not immediately updated on your other device, don’t freak out
  • Restarting the game forces an immediate save file synch, so keep that in mind.

Note: Given that the wide range of PC hardware out there, the fixes mentioned here may or may not work for you. But it’s worth giving them a shot since these have worked for players who own the PC version of Quantum Break.
