Rocket League Developers Admit They Got Very Lucky, Would Still Go On PS+ If They Got A Choice

Psyonix's take on how Rocket League became as big as it did.

Rocket League

Rocket League has been one of the biggest success stories of this generation- an indie game, a sequel to a long forgotten title from the previous console generation, releasing to universal acclaim, and going on to become one of the most successful titles of last year- successful enough that console game manufacturers began to bend over backwards to have the game on their systems, since having the game was such a talking point.

Speaking at a GDC panelRocket League’s developers Psyonix noted that they had become ‘extremely lucky’ with the game- the title was inherently viral, with its gameplay lending to multiple GIFs that could percolate through the internet, and it managed to hit the ground running with a massive base of users thanks to it being offered for free on PS+. Psyonix admitted that they would definitely go with PS+ again if they got the choice- though they also had a bit of advice for future game developers looking to launch on Sony’s service. They said that that offering a game for free can lead to a large install base right off the bat, but developers should make sure that players have something to spend money on in game from the very first week itself.

Rocket League is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It is set to be the first game ever to offer full cross platform multiplayer. If you don’t have it already, stop doing whatever you are doing, and get it now.
