Nintendo’s3DS handheld caused them a fair bit of legal trouble, when they got sued for the autostereoscopy technology that lends the handheld its signature 3D effect. A couple of years back, they were found guilty of infringing on patents, and asked to pay damages- however, apparently that ruling got overturned.

Nikkei is reporting that the decision has been overturned and Nintendo actually won the case. The American court in question seems to have overturned the original ruling, and decided that Nintendo did not infringe upon the patent. Speaking to Nikkei, Nintendo confirmed the reversal of this decision, stating ‘this ruling affirms our original assertion, and is an appropriate decision’

The original 3DS’s autosteroscopy technology has since been iterated upon, with the rendition in the New 3DS handhelds, which uses camera face tracking to ensure that the 3D effect does not break, the best example of the technology yet. Going forward, Nintendo may feel more comfortable including it in their future hardware.
