This can only be good news for everyone invested in VR.

Virtual reality is the next big thing- that’s something we’ve all been hearing, though we wouldn’t know it, given just how quiet the launches of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have been thus far. And yet, the burgeoning medium is set to grow massively in the coming year, if this new report from American video game industry body Entertainment Software Association is to be believed.

According to the report, 40% of all gamers claim that they will be buying a virtual reality headset within the next one year. 55% of all gamers in North America are familiar with VR, and of those, 58% claim that they intend to play a game in VR.

This is, in general, good news, because as mentioned above, VR has so far been slow to take off- and while one could argue that the VR product that is the best and most compelling proposition for the mass market, the PlayStation VR, is not yet out, it is hard to deny that in terms of wider market impact, thus far VR has been a bit of a damp squib. Hopefully it turns out to be more of a slow burn than that, though.
