One of the best surprises at Sony’s E3 show this year was the Spider-Man game that they showed off. The open world action adventure game seems to be under development at Insomniac, and it looks to be the first good Spider-Man game we have gotten in a decade, ever since Spider-Man 2 first came out.
The good news is, it’s not going to be a one off, either. Jay Ong of Marvel spoke to GamesIndustry.biz and VentureBeat about Marvel’s gaming plans, and cleared the air on a lot of things about Spider-Man. For instance, he made it clear that it would only be the first game in a series, and that Sony and Insomniac would be making more of them over time. He also made it very clear that these PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man games would be the only console Spider-Man games that exist from this point on- in other words, we can’t expect Activision or some other companies making Spider-Man games intermittently as well. This Sony and Insomniac series is the future.
This gives me hope that we may actually be able to see good Spider-Man games going forward- Insomniac are excellent developers, and with Sony’s backing, we might be able to see a Spidey game with a good budget, and actual good gameplay for a change.
I can’t wait.
