PS4 Is Doing Slightly Better In Japan Than PS3 Was, Media Create Estimates

But there's more to it than meets the eye.

Yesterday, we reported that the PS4 had touched sales of 3 million in Japan- it was a big milestone that the console finally hit, and it should be commended for that. Today, Media Create issued a short statement comparing sales of the PS4 and PS3, noting that launch aligned, the PS4 seems to be doing a ‘little’ better.

“PS4 sold more than three million units in 125 weeks since its release,” the statement reads (via DualShockers). “PS3 achieved three million units sold in 127 weeks (in the second week of April 2009). The popularization rate of the PS4 has reached a pace roughly on the same level as the PS3.

“It should be noted that, when comparing software sales of both models by the weeks in which they reached three million units, PS4 is at 11.36 million games sold, while PS3 was at 11.35 million. They’re almost on the same scale on this as well.

“Considering elements like the expansion of digital download sales and the shrinking of the market, it’s estimated that PS4 has a slightly better momentum.”

Of course, this statement is ignoring the context of the two releases- the PS3 launched at an abnormally high price that was unaffordable for the bulk of the market, and had some actual competition in the Japanese market by an incredibly well selling Wii, and a surprisingly decently performing Xbox 360. By contrast, the PS4 launched at a reasonable price, and has had no competition in the Japanese market- that considered, the picture for the PS4’s performance becomes a whole lot more dire.
