The PlayStation 4 NEO stands in the enviable position of being the first console when it launches later this year- while Microsoft beat Sony to the punch with the reveal of their Scorpio, it won’t be put until late 2017. The PS4 NEO, when it launches, will be the first incrementally iterative console launched.

It is this, as well as all the other technological advancements that NEO will bring with it to the table, that make it so groundbreaking. Speaking at the IFA 2016 show (via DualShockers), Sony’s CEO Kazuo Hirai said that the PS4 “continues to push the boundaries” while “reaching new heights in innovation and entertainment.” He noted that the entire PlayStation ecosystem, including hardware, games, and network services, has been “widely acclaimed” and extremely well received by consumers and the industry overall. He noted that the PS4 is the fastest selling PlayStation console ever, more than even the PS2, which went on to sell well in excess of 150 million units worldwide.

“With innovation continuing to peak in and around the PlayStation ecosystem, we continue to invest in growth initiatives,” Hirai added, pointing to the upcoming PlayStation VR as one of these intiiatives.

“Virtual reality launches us into a new realm that promises limitless possibilities starting with games, but expanding soon across our entire Sony group,” the executive added. “VR will enable us to leverage our technological strength in areas such as digital imaging, content creation, and production. So Sony is well positioned to set the trends in how, where and when you access content today, and also in the future.”

The PlayStation VR is set to launch on October 13- the PlayStation 4 NEO is expected to be announced at the PlayStation Meeting next week, with a release presumably set to follow shortly afterwards.
