It looks like early indications were correct- this week’s Media Create numbers are out, and they indicate that the PlayStation VR, Sony’s new VR headset for the PS4 console, has performed surprisingly strongly in the territory. According to these numbers (via NeoGAF), the headset sold 51,644 units in Japan in its launch week.
Those are actually fairly good numbers- notably, they more than double the Xbox One’s launch numbers in the country (Microsoft’s new console sold 25,674 units upon launch in Japan), and if the PlayStation VR were being tracked as a standalone system, then it would be the highest selling one in Japan this week, selling more than the PS4 or the 3DS.
That said, the PlayStation VR didn’t put up as strong of a showing as far as software numbers go- the highest selling PSVR game in the country was PlayStation VR Worlds, which sold under 6,000 units. No other PlayStation VR game managed to chart at all.
Of course, given that the PSVR is probably selling to a technologically informed customer base, and that its best games are available digitally, it’s possible that it’s pulling in strong software showings via PSN, which wouldn’t be reflected in retail sales- but if not, then the PSVR will quickly need to get some killer apps so that its early momentum does not fizzle out.
