Detroit: Become Human Is ’20 Times More Complex Than Any Other Quantic Dream Game’

That happens when you make an actual game over a barely interactive movie.

Detroit Become Human (4)

Detroit: Become Human is the next title by Quantic Dream, one that actually looks to be a video game for a change, instead of a barely interactive, poorly written movie. Making it an interactive video game, with actual divergent paths based on what you do, naturally made it more complex than any other title from Quantic Dream yet.

How complex? Try 20 times. At least, that’s what David Cage of Quantic Dream said in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, also noting that the game’s script took far longer to complete as a result.

“It’s a big burden, to be honest,” he continued. “I’ve just finished the script for Detroit. It took me more than two years, and that’s working around six days a week. It’s probably 20 times more complex than anything we’ve ever done. It’s a lot for one brain to handle.

“Fortunately, I have a very talented team helping me keep track of the branches and finding good ideas for each one. When it’s just one brain, you can only have so many good ideas in one day. The fact that it’s collaborative work helps me, but I like the fact that it starts with something very personal.”

I suppose this is good news, it implies that there’s a lot of choice and divergence in the script. It also indicates that the game may be better written than previous Quantic Dream games. Detroit: Become Human may actually end up becoming the best Quantic Dream game, when it launches on PS4 exclusively in 2017.
