Wii U Production Officially Ends For Japan

So ends the troubled saga of the Wii U.

Posted By | On 31st, Jan. 2017

With the Wii U only having sold 200,000 units worldwide last quarter, and with Nintendo preparing to launch its successor in the Switch this March, it should come as no surprise that production of the system is already coming to an end. Nintendo has confirmed on its website (via Kotaku) that Wii U production is officially discontinued for Japan- any Wii U systems that are on the market now are the final ones you will be able to get before they are all gone.

This ends the Wii U’s troubled life, which came in at a little over four years. The Wii U ended up selling slightly over 13.5 million units worldwide, a dismal number that is by far Nintendo’s worst showing in the console market.

As of right now, it is unclear whether or not production of Wii U consoles for North America and Europe has also ended- but given that the system has been chronically out of stock over the last few months, it is probably safe to conclude that Nintendo has stopped manufacturing and shipping them out worldwide at this point.
