1.5 Million Nintendo Switch Units Sold Worldwide, Says SuperData

The Zelda effect.

While we will have to wait for the end of the month to get official numbers from Nintendo at their financial briefing, it seems like the system is off to a great start nonetheless. We’ve been hearing reports of numbers, sellouts, and mass interest in the system from around the world, but we finally have some numbers to attach to the system’s performance.

Analyst and tracking firm SuperData says that the Nintendo Switch has sold 1.5 million units worldwide- of these, 500,000 consoles have been sold in the US, 360,000 have been sold in Japan, and European numbers are supposed to be roughly equivalent to Japan’s, with 85,000 units sold in the UK, and a staggering 110,000 in France.

Apparently, Zelda is the big driver here- 89% of the people who bought the Switch have reportedly bought a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild too, with 1.35 million copies of the game having been sold worldwide, just on the Switch. This means that the Switch and Zelda both are likely to top sales charts for March worldwide- which will be a welcome respite for Nintendo from the Wii U slump that they were suffering.

At GamingBolt, we ended up being impressed with the Switch’s potential, though we did recognize that it has a lot of issues that currently plague it in the meanwhile. We were, however, especially bowled over by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which we called one of the greatest games ever made. For many, maybe Zelda alone is worth buying a Switch for.
