When Naughty Dog first envisioned Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, an expansion that focuses on Chloe and Nadine, it didn’t consider making it a standalone experience. The desire to do something fresh was there and with Nathan Drake’s story wrapped up, the developer began exploring other options.
Eventually, as per writer Josh Scherr when speaking to Game Informer, the decision was made to reintroduce Chloe to the series. “We had the unique opportunity to do something that was truly stand-alone, unlike Left Behind which was like the missing chunk of the story in The Last of Us. This is something we can do completely independently while still in the same universe with the same characters, and exploring new relationships with them.”
While it had the same scope as Left Behind, The Lost Legacy turned grew into something larger than the team expected. Game director Kurt Margenau noted that, “We tried to keep it small. As we started coming up with story ideas, it just became clear that with new characters and in this genre of Uncharted, it has to be big. With the gameplay stuff we wanted to explore, it felt like it needed more room to breathe.”
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is out later this year for PS4.
