The PS4 is a huge success- and the PS4 Pro has secured the future of the platform for some years to come. And while the Nintendo Switch has taken off, it is too different to threaten the PS4, while the Scorpio has to contend with highly entrenched competition.
In other words, Sony is secure. And it is now looking to the future of PlayStation. In an interview with Asia Nikkei, Sony’s CEO Kaz Hirai stated that the company would be looking to continue with consoles for the foreseeable future, and that the direction of the PS5 is currently under consideration. “Our game subsidiary is discussing which direction to take — how to use a big platform like the PlayStation going forward. Generally speaking, I don’t think it is a good idea to drop consoles entirely, since we seek to offer the platform worldwide,” Hirai said.
I foresee Sony continuing with the same direction they have established with the PS4 for the foreseeable future- so if a PS5 exists, it will be a cheap, powerful, simple to develop for console. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as Sony can maintain the kind of developer support that they have for the PS4.
