PlayStation VR Upgrade Not Coming Anytime Soon, Says Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida

That's a smart decision.

The PlayStation VR launched last year, and though sales have been slow due to supply constraints, apparently it is officially a success- and Sony certainly made a strong case for it at their E3 show earlier this week. However, right now, Sony is focused on consolidating the PSVR as it stands, instead of working on upgraded hardware that they can release.

Speaking with Jagat Play at E3 2017, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that as of right now, there are no plans to release a new PlayStation VR headset. The existing one is optimized to work with the standard PS4, so there would be nothing that Sony would be able to gain from an upgrade.

I agree with the reasoning, and there is also the point to consider that Sony can barely produce enough of the existing model as it is- another model will only lead to more chronic shortages. Plus with the development ecosystem for the PSVR finally taking off, it is Sony’s job to inculcate and cultivate it, not fragment it with an unnecessary upgrade. Hopefully, a PSVR2 is held off until the launch of the PS5, at the very least.
