Destiny 2: ‘We Can’t Change The Core, Otherwise It’s Not Destiny’, Says Bungie

Bungie talks about how they're keeping the identity of the series intact with Destiny 2.

With the launch of Destiny 2 approaching, information on the game has been coming in thick and fast, and while most of it has been very exciting, especially for fans of the game, there have been a few people who’re worried that there haven’t been enough changes to the formula that was set up in the first game. Bungie, however, feel like they’ve made plenty of changes, and the things that they have not changed needed to stay as they were, because they define the identity of the series- which makes sense.

Recently, in an interview with MetroDestiny 2’s executive producer David Allen was asked this very question, to which he said that Bungie have kept the core of Destiny intact to make sure that the experience doesn’t change at a fundamental level. “I think there are core elements that are fundamental to Destiny,” Allen said, “and if you think about… like I said, at its core it’s an action game. It’s a shooter and we want to make sure it continues to be a great shooter. And it’s a game where you have your character and build them up over time, and it’s a game where you have social interactions with other players, whether they’re soft social interactions where you’re just running across people in public spaces or it’s six-player competitive or competing in raids.”

“Those are the things that in my mind are fundamental to Destiny,” he finished, “and so you want to build up around those things, but you don’t want to change the core of the game or otherwise it’s not Destiny.” That definitely makes sense. It doesn’t feel from what we’ve seen so far like Bungie are playing it safe or anything like that. What we’ve seen and heard of Destiny 2 sounds very exciting, to say the least.
