Overwatch Lead Writer Explains Why Terry Crews Didn’t Play Doomfist

Studio preferred Sahr Ngaujah's rendition of the character.

Blizzard Entertainment was out in full force during the San Diego Comic Con with its first ever official cosplay of Overwatch’s next big hero Doomfist. The character is currently on the Public Test Realm server for PC but will arrive on July 27th for all platforms to get a hold of. And while the developer hired actor Sahr Ngaujah to voice the hero, several fans were still shouting for Terry Crews at the Q&A panel dedicated to Doomfist’s design.

So why didn’t Crews nab the role of Doomfist? As it turns out, Blizzard just liked Ngaujah better. Overwatch lead writer Michael Chu explained to GameSpot that, “We love Terry. Terry’s awesome. He came and visited us. We had a great time. But when we were looking for Doomfist, we were looking for something very specific given his role in the game and everything.

“When we were early in the audition process, we heard Sahr, who’s the actor who plays Doomfist, and he just blew us away immediately. Once we heard his voice, it was like, ‘Holy crap. That’s Doomfist.'” Sahr’s ability to bring “all these different aspects of the character to life” was particularly praised.

As the above indicates, Blizzard isn’t inherently opposed to working with Crews. He could potentially have another role in the game sometime in the far future. For now though, Doomfist isn’t it and that’s okay.

Along with Doomfist, Blizzard will also bring Loot Box changes, the revamped Highlight system and several changes for heroes like McCree and Reinhardt to Overwatch on July 27th.
