Skull and Bones Is Going To Be A Long Term IP; Ubisoft Has Seen ‘Unprecedented Demand’

Ubisoft leading the Games as a Service charge again.

Skull and Bones looks interesting, and like the kind of thing we have all said we’ve wanted from Ubisoft for a while- a new IP based on the sailing and pirate mechanics in Assassin’s Creed III and Black Flag. And it looks like a lot of people are interested in what Ubisoft has to offer, because speaking at a financial meeting, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that the game has seen unprecedented demand, with the most number of beta registrations for any Ubisoft game ever.

Ubisoft intends for this IP to be a long term thing, too. “We are building a game that we want to support in the long term, that relies on strong mechanics; RPG, online,” said Ubisoft Singapore’s Olivier de Rotalier. “We want to build a strong service to be able to support a long-term experience. We are convinced that the core gameplay that we are building is big enough to experience on the long term and keep people engaged. We have a plan to make it last.”

Ubisoft, of course, has incredible cachet in the long term games as a service arena- they currently are successfully overseeing Rainbow Six: Siege, The Division, The Crew, and For Honor. There is no reason to believe that they couldn’t do well with Skull and Bones either. Me, I just hope that there is a viable single player experience to the game, too…
