The Japanese dedicated gaming market was considered to be all but dead, lost to the rise of smartphone gaming. However, thanks to the strong performance of the 3DS, PS4, and now the Switch, dedicated gaming in Japan has rallied.
We’ve already discussed how well the Switch is doing there- but in that hubbub, it looks like another important milestone was overlooked. The PS4 has now hit 5 million units sold in Japan- what’s more, it has managed to hit this number quicker than the PS3 did, which seems to indicate that the system is tracking better for lifetime sales than the PS4.
Given the upcoming release of highly sought after games such as Dragon Quest 11, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Monster Hunter World, the PS4 should be able to continue its stunning success in Japan. Hopefully it, the Switch, and the 3DS can keep traditional, dedicated gaming in Japan alive for a long time to come.
